Awardee:

Mr. Alvin Curling

Mr. Alvin Curling MPP,CD (Alvin to many), attended the University of Technology - UTech (then the College of Arts Science and Technology - CAST) – where he obtained a diploma in Business Administration in the early 1960’s. Some time after, he immigrated to Canada, where he studied at Seneca College of Applied Arts and Technology and later at York University. Alvin then worked as an Educational Administrator at Seneca, after which he embarked on a successful career in representative politics.

In 1985 Alvin made history by being elected the first Liberal MPP in the riding of Scarborough-Rouge River. In that election he amassed the highest total vote in Canadian history. Since 1985 Alvin has successfully ran and won five consecutive elections in the Scarborough-Rouge riding. Today he is one of the longest serving members of the Ontario Legislature.

During his years as an Ontario MPP, Alvin served as Minister of Housing under the Liberal Government of Premier David Peterson and again as Minister of Skills Development with special responsibility for Literacy between 1987 and 1989. In addition to his already outstanding career in representative politics, he also served as Parliamentary Assistant to the Premier, Parliamentary Assistant to the Minister of Intergovernmental affairs, member of the Premier’s Council on Science and Technology.

As a member of the official opposition in the Ontario Legislature, Alvin has maintained a very robust presence on the matters before the House. He has served a Critic for Housing, Urban affairs, Solicitor General, Youth Employment, Colleges and Universities, Human Rights and the Disabled. Mr. Curling has held the positions of Deputy Opposition House Leader and Deputy Whip. During deliberations preceding the passage of Bill 26, in 1995, Alvin single-handedly delayed the passage of the bill by refusing to vote or leave the legislature for eighteen (18) hours. This action conclusively demonstrates Alvin’s belief in the philosophy of the democratic process.

Alvin has sat on many boards and advisory councils and has recently been awarded the Commander of the Order of Distinction (CD) by the Jamaican Government. Congratulations to our distinguished Alumnus Mr. Alvin Curling MPP, CD.
