Dr. Alfred Sangster
Dr.Alfred W. Sangster
was born in St. Elizabeth, Jamaica in the late 1920s, where he spent
his earlier years as a pupil at Munro College. As a youth, he developed a
genuine admiration and appreciation for the natural sciences, which today
manifests itself in his environmentally centered interests.
This admiration and a desire for excellence, propelled the young Sangster
towards more advanced studies of the physical laws of nature. His mastery
of the sciences earned him a first class honours degree in chemistry at Queens
University in Northern Ireland. Armed with determination and a desire to
have an impact on humanity, Mr. Sangsters quest for knowledge culminated
in his achievement of a Ph. D. conferment in organic chemistry.
At the young age of about twenty-three years old, Dr. Sangster began imparting
his knowledge at the University College of the West Indies. When he left
the University of the West Indies (UWI), to join the College of Arts Science
and Technology (CAST) in 1970, he had progressed to the position of Vice
Dean of Evening Studies.
Dr. Sangster (Doc as he is affectionately known), lead CAST with vision and
commitment for about twenty-six years. Under his distinguished guidance,
the student population increased from 1,200 to about 6,000 in 1996. Fifty
new programs were added and three academically distinct departments including
Computer Studies, were added. A swimming pool, a fully established sports
program and Farqurahson Hall were all manifestations of Docs effective
leadership abilities and strength of character.
Over the years, as Doc sought to bring about the metamorphosis of CAST into
a university, he developed essential linkages with Ryerson University (then
a polytechnic institute). In 1986 CAST became a degree-granting institution
and by 1996 he presided over the transformation of CAST into the University
of Technology, Jamaica.
Dr. Sangster has chaired dozens of boards, foundations and councils and has
received more awards than most can imagine.
The CAST-UTECH Alumni Association (Ontario Chapter) salutes Dr. Alfred W.
Sansgter for his lifelong contribution to the institution, to Jamaica, to
the Caribbean Region and to the World.
